Expected Initial Career Challenges

There are hurdles at every phase of life but we continue to hustle. The basic phenomenon that kindles one to move forward is the hope that there will be light at the end of the tunnel. The fresh graduates with the hope that they’ll reach their individual dream job, move forward with small steps. Though they seem to be small at the beginning they create a huge impact in their career growth. These steps introduce a number of difficulties that build and make some stronger and a few find them hard to handle.

In such cases, isn't it better to replace the word ‘difficulties’ with ‘challenges’? The word ‘challenge’ creates intrinsic motivation to face, fight and overcome the situation. It increases the strength, confidence and trust from within to work towards the greater goal despite the negative forces.

The fundamental challenge for any fresh graduate is ‘finding the right job’. Once the candidate’s name is up on the list of a job portal there are n numbers of vacancies (both fake and real) that are waiting for someone to be hired. The choice decides the destiny. The challenge here is staying undistracted by an inappropriate job with an attractive salary or an MNC with an unfavorable role. On the other hand, an exciting job in a startup or a considerable pay for a suitable role shouldn’t be judged. The next phase in the process is attending a series of interviews with self-trust and determination, because a hero/ heroine never back off in his/ her victorious story.

A successful interview results in placement that is accompanied with a ‘probationary period’. It is the most crucial period for any new or fresh candidate joining an organization. There exists a two way communication both verbal and non-verbal between the employer and the employee. As well known the employer monitors the candidate and conveys the progress to the employee even if it is the other way around. More importantly this period decides the candidate's eligibility to receive an appointment letter. In particular it tests one’s purpose, stability and ability to learn from trial and error to completing the task.  In short, it challenges an individuals’ KSA and provides a chance to prove one to self and the employer.

In the course of employment it is common to notice ‘partiality’ for various reasons which may include personality, seniority, nepotism and many more dominance. Even the slightest touch of partiality can disrupt an employee’s contribution towards work. The way to overcome these challenges is to either ask/report about it or to concentrate on self-growth and move on with improving self. In the initial stages it may steal away a deserved appreciation, recognition or motivation. True, but focusing on self-development and moving forward with self-appreciation and self-motivation will lead to a productive end result. These deviations should be analyzed and has to be acted upon based on the worthiness of the challenge faced.

During the course of employment and considerable association with a company, there may exist a ‘void feeling’. This feeling questions the reason for being employed, and the objective of the dedication and commitment towards work. It honestly makes one feel like losing self. This is one of the many reasons why experts talk openly about work-life balance and its importance. Now, passion plays its role. A fresher being exposed to new opportunities can opt an extra activity. There are many examples of professionals who not only excel in their profession but also in the art of dancing, singing, writing, music or making their mark in sports or social services. Honestly, not all can excel but it can help one come up with extraordinary ideas, relieve a few from mental stress and provide time to be their true selves which will ultimately bestow them the energy to fix things right.

A candidate broadens K(nowledge), S(kills) and A(ttitudes) during the transition from a fresher to an experienced individual. This transformation has to be nourished with ‘overall development’. The challenge here is in not getting into the routine of doing the same work for years, not settling comfortably with the existing role and being hesitant to change. The practice of observing and learning from others with a focus on self-growth will invoke the spirit to know about new arenas, exciting opportunities and a chance to examine the areas of improvement. The practice of upskilling and upgrading is vital for an aspirant to progress in overall development. This will make a person a lifelong learner and equips one to take effective new initiatives.

There is always a vision that drives to move forward. The importance then should be on focusing on experimenting new habits and feeding self with positive thoughts. The strict emphasis on the balance between passion and profession will help to choose and effectively use right opportunities wisely.

Comment the other challenges you faced and how skillfully you handled them.

Let's learn from each other!
