A Hero's Flawed Destiny: Examining Ajhaz's role in ‘Kaithi’

The movie Kaithi, is one of Director Lokesh Kanagaraj's most remarkable works. While Actor Karthi takes the lead as the main character, it's another character, Ajhas Ahmed, who possesses a truly tragic story. When analyzing the character, Aristotle's classic traits of a Tragic Hero are clearly evident.

Ajhas Ahmed operates undercover, nearing the end of his training period and participating in a drug bust mission. This dual life he leads aligns perfectly with the archetype of a Tragic Hero. He is a nobleman about to officially assume a noble position. The story has multiple close-call moments that threaten to unveil his true identity, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats.

Ajhas tries his best to play the role of a ‘bad guy’ and remains true to his nature by warning his superior about the worsening situation. This makes him more relatable and endears him to the audience. Although he is focused on achieving his goal, he still does his utmost to salvage the situation.

The key traits of a tragic hero are ‘hamartia’ and the reversal of fortune. Just when the audience breathes a sigh of relief, believing Ajhas to be safe, he receives a call. A call he could have easily ignored. In this critical moment, the audience witnesses the tragic flaw, ‘hamartia’. Ajhas unfortunately makes a choice that seals his fate. If he had left the scene for good, he wouldn't have been a tragic hero. Whether due to overconfidence or sheer bravery in facing his predicament, he meets his tragic end.

Ajhas's error in judgment sets in motion the reversal of his fortune. In his final moments, he makes an attempt to save his superior. When he realizes that his true identity is exposed, Ajhas meets his demise with a sense of honor and pride.

Numerous amazing movies and characters capture our attention. This is often due to the storyline, the actors' skills, or the impact of the character. In this case, there are several reasons to appreciate this film. In particular, with its compelling storyline and the exceptional performance of the actor portraying Ajhas, it's easy for the audience to empathize with his character and share in his moments of misfortune.
